About Ford ignitions

Given how long the Transit has been in production, there's no single ignition setup across the range — plenty of older vans still use a standard turn-key barrel, while newer models have moved to keyless or push-button starting.

That's why the first step is always your registration plate and a plain description of the problem — does the key go in, does it turn, is it sticking or has it broken — before we say which type of repair or replacement is right.

Ignition options for Ford vans

  • Mechanical ignition barrel repair or replacement — Suited to vans with a traditional turn-key ignition where the barrel has become worn, sticky, seized or physically damaged.
  • Electrical ignition switch replacement — Covers the switch sitting behind the barrel, which can fail independently so the key turns but the electrics don't react properly.
  • Electronic ignition (EIS) work — Applies to vans running an electronic ignition unit instead of a plain mechanical barrel, including certain push-button setups.
  • Broken key extraction from the ignition — Getting a snapped blade safely out of the ignition first, without further damage, ahead of cutting a replacement key.

Ford Van Ignition Switch Replacement in Southampton

Replacing the electrical ignition switch is a job we're regularly asked to do on Fords. On a turn-key model, the barrel is the physical part the key fits into, and the switch sitting behind it is what actually sends power out to the van once the key is turned.

A worn barrel tends to announce itself mechanically — the key won't go in cleanly, won't turn, or feels stiff. A faulty switch behaves differently: the key can turn as normal while the dash, accessories or starter fail to respond, or power drops in and out. Since a flat battery or a wiring issue can produce the same symptoms, we check your van properly before suggesting a new switch.

Hanging on to your existing key is often possible, depending on the van and what's failed. If a fresh key or reprogramming turns out to be necessary, you'll hear it from us first.

Ford ignition questions

Can you fit a replacement ignition switch to my Ford van?

Yes — it's one of the Ford jobs we do most often. We'll first work out whether the problem is the electrical switch, the barrel itself, or something unrelated like the battery or wiring, then talk you through what's needed.

The key goes into my Transit but won't turn — is that the ignition?

A key that's physically stuck, catching or won't rotate usually points to a worn key blade or wear inside the mechanical barrel rather than an electrical fault. We'll check both the key and the barrel before suggesting any work.

Will you look at a push-button Ford van?

Yes, we can assess electronic ignition systems on push-button Fords. There's no mechanical barrel involved on these, so the diagnosis and work differ from a standard key-turn setup.
