Volkswagen vans we cover
Send the registration and we'll check exactly which ignition your van carries before saying anything definite.
About Volkswagen ignitions
We work on the Transporter, Caddy and Crafter, each of which has gone through several generations — Transporters in particular turn up as camper conversions too — so what ignition system a van has really depends on its age and model.
A Transporter with a tired key-turn ignition isn't the same job as one running an electronic start system. Give us the model, year and what the ignition is actually doing, and we'll talk through what applies to that van.
Ignition options for Volkswagen vans
- Mechanical ignition barrel repair or replacement — Suited to vans with a traditional turn-key ignition where the barrel has become worn, sticky, seized or physically damaged.
- Electrical ignition switch replacement — Covers the switch sitting behind the barrel, which can fail independently so the key turns but the electrics don't react properly.
- Electronic ignition (EIS) work — Applies to vans running an electronic ignition unit instead of a plain mechanical barrel, including certain push-button setups.
- Broken key extraction from the ignition — Getting a snapped blade safely out of the ignition first, without further damage, ahead of cutting a replacement key.
Volkswagen Van Ignition Switch Replacement in Southampton
Electrical switch replacement comes up regularly on VW vans, especially the Transporter, Caddy and Crafter. With a key-turn Volkswagen, the barrel is what the key physically rotates in, while the switch behind it feeds power through the van's systems as the key moves round.
Barrel wear tends to be obvious mechanically — a stiff key, one that catches, or one that won't turn at all. A switch problem usually looks different: the key turns freely but nothing electrical happens, or you get flickering warning lights or lost power as it moves. Because a flat battery or wiring fault can mimic this, we confirm the actual cause first and only fit a new switch when it's genuinely needed.
Hanging on to your existing key is often possible, depending on the van and what's failed. If a fresh key or reprogramming turns out to be necessary, you'll hear it from us first.

Volkswagen ignition questions
The key turns in my VW but nothing happens — do I need a new switch?
Possibly, and it is a common fix on Volkswagen vans, but a battery or wiring problem can cause exactly the same symptom. We confirm the cause before suggesting a switch replacement.
My Transporter has been converted into a camper — is that a problem?
Not usually. The ignition belongs to the base Transporter, so a conversion doesn't typically change that work. Just flag any extra locks fitted separately.
