About the Ford Transit and its keys
Built across numerous generations and body styles — panel van, double cab, minibus, dropside and tipper chassis cabs — the full-size Transit has carried several different key technologies over the years. That's why we always start a Transit enquiry by asking for the registration and year rather than guessing.
Lost Ford Transit keys
When all your Transit keys have vanished, the van typically needs attending where it sits. Let us know its location in or around Southampton, the registration plate, and roughly when you last had the keys, and we'll tell you whether a replacement can be cut and programmed for that specific vehicle.
Spare Transit keys
Plenty of Transits get passed between drivers or used across a small fleet, which makes relying on a single key risky. It's usually far more straightforward to cut a spare while an original is still working than to deal with a total loss later.
Tippers, chassis cabs and converted Transits
Adding a body conversion doesn't alter the base van's key system, though it can bring extra locks for tool boxes or rear storage. Mention anything fitted to the van so we know the full picture before quoting.
Transit remote keys and programming
Between being dropped in footwells, buried under tools and knocked about on site, Transit remotes don't get an easy life. Tell us the generation and what the fob currently does — sometimes it's just a battery, sometimes a fresh programmed remote is needed. See van key programming.
Lockouts and damaged Transit keys
We regularly get calls about a Transit key stuck inside the cab or a snapped blade jammed in a door. Larger Transits can have several separate door and body locks, so tell us exactly which one is causing the problem. See keys locked in a van.
Transit ignition problems
A Transit key that sticks, resists turning or won't move at all often points to a worn blade or damage inside the mechanical barrel. That's distinct from an electrical ignition switch fault, where the key turns fine but the dash, accessories or starter stay unresponsive. Because battery and wiring issues can mimic both, we check thoroughly before suggesting any repair. See Ford van ignition replacement.
Where we attend
Shifting a full-size Transit without a key isn't practical, so we come out to wherever it's sitting — a yard, a driveway or a job site across Southampton — as long as the location allows us to work safely. See all areas covered.
What to send for a quote
- Registration and year of your Transit
- Where the van is parked
- Which key type it is (or was)
- Whether any working key is left
Compatibility is checked against your exact van before anything is booked — some years and variants fall outside what we can do.

Ford Transit key questions
I've lost my only Ford Transit key — can you sort a Southampton replacement?
Usually, depending on the year and key system fitted. Give us the registration, year and where the van is, and we'll confirm before coming out.
Does the Transit's generation make a difference?
It does — key systems have changed over the years, which is exactly why we ask for the registration and year upfront.
I've got a tipper-bodied Transit, does that complicate things?
The core vehicle key depends on the base Transit regardless of body style. Just flag any additional body locks so we know what's involved.
